It’s Time to Make the Move – Migrate from Salesforce Classic to Lightning

      Apr 12, 2019

      4 minute read

Ever since the inception of Lightning, Salesforce has invested a great deal of effort to promote it. The CRM giant is continuously enriching Lightning with innovative features and is working religiously to make it more advanced.

If you are new to Salesforce, then you can opt for Lightning from the very beginning. However, existing users have to decide when—and not if—they want to switch to Lightning.

Since all new innovations will now happen in Lightning, so the time is right for you to make the move as Salesforce will turn on the Lightning Experience for all their customers on a rolling basis with the release of Winter ’20 in October 2019.

      Salesforce-lightning

The Spring ‘19 release puts all uncertainties to the corner, as it’s clear that Lightning is the only future of Salesforce.

So, if you are still using Classic and have no plan to move to Lightning, then it’s time to reconsider your strategy. You still have eight months to plan, strategize, and migrate.

In this blog post, we will discuss the migration plan which we have put into action for more than 50 organizations.

      As-Is Analysis

We do a thorough analysis of how your Salesforce instance has been configured. This includes making a list of all the users with defined roles and listing all the integration points, customizations, and the total amount of data.

From our experience, we have learned that it is always in the best interest to take each department in confidence before the migration. As it is easy to migrate a system but difficult to manage the change.

      Customization Analysis

As a business, you customize a tool to either expand its functionality or to make it meet your business processes. But again, you don’t want your existing customizations to be lost while migrating to Lightning.

So, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of the existing customizations to ensure that none of these are lost in the transition process.

Customization could be anything like codes, objects, fields, tabs, etc.

We map the existing modifications against the Lightning framework and analyze the work that would be needed for re-creation with the new Lightning components.

      Data Backup

Data backup is an important step and helps plan a rollback strategy. We keep a backup of data to recover in cases of data corruption, lost or deleted data, also in case of technical compatibility issues or other possible scenarios.

We keep a manual point-in-time backup of both your data including custom objects’ records, files, and content, and metadata including configuration settings such as custom fields, page layouts, and reports dashboard.

      Gap Analysis

It is extremely important to do a gap analysis of Salesforce Classic and Lightning.

After analyzing the difference (functionalities and features), we create a report of what is possible, what needs to be done the custom way, and what currently is not doable. Once the report is approved by the client, we proceed with the migration.

      Customization Rewriting

While migrating from Classic to Lightning Experience, there are certain customizations that need to be replicated.

It may be required to rewrite these customizations in the new Lightning framework.

The rewriting will add cost and complexity to your projects. But our experts can help rewrite these customizations and deliver the new Lightning components to you.

      Switch View to Lightning

Once the Lightning experience is live, you’ll see the most electrifying interface. The next-generation UI will help your sales and service reps be more productive and effective.

As your business starts getting pinned on the new user interface, we will advise you on how you can use the best Lightning features for your business.

You can encourage your users to move to Lightning and, give them a month or two to understand the functionality.

      Quality Assurance

We put the instance through a stringent quality analysis to ascertain if everything is working fine. We discern the quality of the migration that has taken place and if all the adjustments have been carefully done.

Grazitti, being a meticulous partner, maintains international QA standards and has a team of Salesforce-certified quality engineers. Once the QA team clears the project, the next step is the handoff.

      Handoff

Now is the time to wait, watch, analyze, and evaluate the migration as you have opted to run a Lightning Experience pilot with a small group of users.

Sharing the right kind of educational resources (such as articles, white papers, books), running training sessions before and after the migration, are some of the few ways to take a more proactive approach to support.

Survey, feedback, and satisfaction report from the pilot group will help us take corrective measures to make the migration possible for the entire organization.
